Punjab and Haryana High Court orders to develop car free zones in Punjab, Haryana

Fazilka: In a bid to save historical heritage sites and control pollution by regulating the traffic system, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed Haryana and Punjab to develop car free zones in all the districts. To check the air pollution, the HC has also asked them to use eco-friendly rickshaws as means of commutation.
Inspired by the adaptation of eco-friendly rickshaws and car free zone at Ghanta Ghar Chowk of Fazilka, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had taken suo moto notice of the issue on October 29, 2010, ordered both the states to follow the practice in all districts.
During the hearing on September 23, 2011, the Punjab government had filed an affidavit  stating that more than 500 eco-friendly rickshaws are operating in 12 districts of the state and efforts are on to develop car free zones.
Senior Standing Counsel of Chandigarh also updated information about the efforts in the direction of developing car free zones. The High Court expressed its displeasure over the poor efforts of Haryana government in the matter.
